#REEL IT | ‘The Boys’ – august19

Yo, to all my friends who pop up once a month with that yxng “What’s good in the Cinema right now?”, “What series are you watching atm?”, #REELIT is for you guys. On the first day of each month I’ll give you guys my personal recommendations on what to check out or ‘#REEL’ in the upcoming month, both on the big screen and the one in your living room.

Bare in mind these aren’t full reviews and my opinion may change as I finish a season. So unless it’s got a #REELIT stamp on it, don’t hold me accountable 😁. If it does have my stamp of approval and you still don’t like it ? Upgrade your taste. Happy Watchings

THE BEST ON THE small screen…

Black Monday (SHOWTIME/Sky Atlantic)

1. This show should really be in my hidden gems because I don’t know a single person that watches it, but I ride for it so much that I’m putting it at the right at the top so you can’t miss it. Black Monday is a dark-comedy following the employees of a second-tier Wall Street trading firm in the year leading up to ‘Black Monday’; the day when international stock markets crashed in 1987. This show is thigh-slappingly funny, I swear. I finished it in a day and I’m having withdrawals. #REELIT

THE BOYS (Amazon Prime Video)

2. If you think superheroes are corny (you’re wrong) or CHALDISH (still wrong) this one might convert ya. THE BOYS is a hard R-rated look at what the world would truly look like if we had superheroes in it. It’s like a “What if the Justice League we’re corrupted by the same things we are” type show and it’s crazy. Gore, violence, sex and nudity; those of you with higgy minds will for sure enjoy this one. THE BOYS definitely gets my approval #REELIT

BIG LITTLE LIES (HBO/Sky Atlantic)

3. Lads, wait, this isn’t some Gossip Girl/90210 show, I promise you. Also on it’s second outing, BIG LITTLE LIES is about five “speak to the manager” type mothers living in Monterey, California who get in the mix of a murder investigation. Self-admittedly this one took an episode or two to get into, but the payoff at the end is big. If murder mysteries is your jig, alight here. #REELIT

euphoria (HBO/Sky Atlantic)

4. I swear I’m not being paid by HBO. You’ve probably seen the name of this show thrown around your TL recently. euphoria is a teen drama about a bunch of high school kids as they navigate drugs, sex, social media and all that other teenage jazz. Produced by none other than Drake himself (I probably should have led with that), the show has been gaining a lot of buzz with Leonardo DiCaprio revealing he’s a big fan. I’m only an episode in so I’m not going to stamp it just yet but boy this show is strange and WILD

most anticipated on the BIG SCREEN…

1. GOOD BOYS | 16th August

After being invited to his first kissing party, 12-year-old Max ( Jacob Tremblay) is panicking because he doesn’t know how to kiss. Eager for some pointers, Max and his best friends Thor (Brady Noon) and Lucas (Keith L. Williams) decide to use Max’s dad’s drone to spy on a teenage couple making out next door. But when things go ridiculously wrong, the drone is destroyed.

This trailer just made me crease man. I see the Bad Neighbours vibes. I’m there.

2.Fast&Furious presents HOBBS&SHAW | 1st August

After eight films that have amassed almost $5 billion worldwide, the Fast & Furious franchise now features its first stand-alone vehicle as Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

If you haven’t heard me insult the Fast & Furious franchise then we probably haven’t spoken at length (hold tight Tokyo Drift, the best of the lot). The only reason I’m putting this at number two is because it’s a spin-off and I want to give it a chance without my opinions on what came before. That said, the trailer looks..

3.Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood | 15th August

Quentin Tarantino’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD visits 1969 Los Angeles, where everything is changing, as TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) make their way around an industry they hardly recognise anymore.

I’m not even the biggest of Tarantino fans but regardless, I’m aware that when he drops a movie, you go and see that movie. And so I shall. Plus that cast ? Say less.

4.THE KITCHEN | 9th August

When their husbands are sent to prison by the FBI, mob wives Kathy, Ruby and Claire–played by Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss take business into their own hands, running the rackets and taking out the competition…literally.

Two comedy actors in a drama ? Less of a shock in regards to Melissa McCarthy after her Oscar nominated performance in Can You Ever Forgive Me but Tiffany Haddish ? Boy. Let’s see.

5.ANGEL HAS FALLEN | 23rd August

Following ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ and ‘London Has Fallen’, when there is an assassination attempt on U.S. President Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman), his confidant, Agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler), is wrongfully accused and taken into custody. After escaping from capture, he becomes a man on the run and must evade his own agency and outsmart the FBI in order to find the real threat to the President.

These movies have been my guilty pleasure for a while. The second one was so-so but Olympus Has Fallen is one of them movies I see when I’m flicking through channels and will stop to watch. Let’s see what again has fallen.

… and some hidden gems.

Random Acts of Flyness (HBO)

Random Acts of Flyness is a late night comedy sketch show written, directed and starring Terrence Nance. The show, which satirically explores cultural idioms such as blackness and white supremacy, of course got bashed for ‘race baiting’ but flipping otherwise serious topics on their head in a comedic way makes this show a must-watch for all. #REELIT

SALT (2010)

Angelina Jolie stars in Salt, a contemporary espionage thriller. Before becoming a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt (Jolie) swore an oath to duty, honor, and country. She will prove loyal to these when a defector accuses her of being a Russian sleeper spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture, protect her husband, and stay one step ahead of her colleagues at the CIA.

Speaking to one my guys about this film reminded me how hard it is. Here’s to hoping the Black Widow movie is anything like this.

Broadchurch (ITV/BBC America)

A good ol’ gritty British crime drama. If you’re a fan of Line of Duty, Broadchurch will probably be a bit of you too. It tells the story of an 11-year-old boy whose body is found on the beach and the unfolding of a murder investigation within the Broadchurch community. Taciturn DI Hardy gets the lead on the case over DS Miller who feels the job should have been hers but she must make-do to resolve this mystery case. Up there with the best of the genre. #REELIT

ZERO DARK THIRTY (2012)

For a decade, an elite team of intelligence and military operatives, working in secret across the globe, devoted themselves to a single goal: to find and eliminate Osama bin Laden. ZERO DARK THIRTY reunites the Oscar-winning team of director-producer Kathryn Bigelow and writer-producer Mark Boal for the story of history’s greatest manhunt for the world’s most dangerous man.

It picked up 5 oscars at the 85th Academy Awards and is a spy film about the real-life, decade long hunt for Osama Bin Laden, yet the average person hasn’t heard of it and I don’t know why.

Give something that isn’t your usual preference a shot, you never know, you might get hooked.
